WASHINGTON, DC, USA – On June 13th, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) hosted The United States of Women Summit: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs at the Ronald Reagan Building (WTC Washington, D.C.) in cooperation with the White House Council on Women and Girls. The event drew an estimated 400 participants including entrepreneurs, investors, and senior government officials to engage in a substantive dialogue regarding the state and future of women’s entrepreneurship.

Empowering Women Entrepreneurs served as the inaugural event for this year’s United State of Women and celebrated the achievements of women entrepreneurs and addressed challenges facing women including accessing capital, securing intellectual property and harnessing global markets. Women continue to be an untapped resource almost everywhere, including in corporate board rooms, among venture capital and angel investing recipients, and in the private equity industry. The Summit encouraged participants to strategize inclusive and innovative approaches for expanding opportunities for women within entrepreneurship and investment and focused on opportunities to expand new markets for women through trade.

Maria Contreras-Sweet, Administrator of the SBA and the voice of entrepreneurship on President Obama’s Cabinet, offered remarks on how women are helping to fuel the economy by starting more than 1,100 businesses a day. She then sat down with 11 year old lemonade entrepreneur Mikaila Ulmer for a fireside chat. Ulmer was selected to introduce President Obama at the United State of Women plenary session the following day.

Megan Smith, the US Chief Technology Officer provided the keynote for the Summit. She spoke about the power of data, innovation and technology, and stressed empowering people, especially women. Summit speakers also included GSA Administrator Denise Turner Roth, Georgetown Cupcake co-founders Katherine Berman and Sophie Kallinis LaMontagne, Lisa Price the CEO of Carol’s Daughter, and Nely Galan, President of Entertainment for Telemundo.
