Taiwan, A Top Choice for E-commerce Firms: TWTC

Oct 20, 2016

TAIPEI, TAIWAN – Promoting cooperation in cross-border e-commerce, the 15th World Business Leaders Roundtable, co-hosted by WTCA, kicked off in Xiamen on September 7, 2016.

Addressing the event, Taipei World Trade Center Chairman Mr. Francis Kuo-Hsin Liang noted that Taiwan has a well-developed e-commerce environment, which makes the science and technology based economy the best launching pad for firms looking to enter Asia's e-commerce market. Liang emphasized that the annual value of Taiwan’s online retail market has already grown to US$23 billion, which is roughly equivalent to the scale of the entire Southeast Asia online retail market.

Taiwan is home to the largest internet venture community in the Southeast Asia region. Liang pointed out that with a startup-friendly environment and an abundant talent pool, Taiwan has become an ideal base for global venture capital seed funds and accelerators such as 500 Startups. Liang also pointed out that e-commerce is now an integral part of life in Taiwan, with many startups creating innovations such as the restaurant reservation system EZTABLE, the travel booking platform KKday, and the restaurant POS system iChef.

Despite the global economic downturn, the e-commerce industry has undergone tremendous growth in recent years, particularly in Asia. When interviewed by the press, Liang took the opportunity to invite firms worldwide to work with Taiwanese e-commerce operators and develop the global market.

The Roundtable meeting this year was joined by more than 1,000 representatives from nearly 20 countries. Firms including Alibaba, Amazon, PayPal and Yandex also attended the event to discuss the latest trends in e-commerce.

Following the Roundtable, the 19th China International Fair for Investment and Trade (CIFIT) was held September 8-11 and was attended by WTCA Chairman Mr. Ghazi Abu Nahl, WTCA CEO Mr. Scott Ferguson, and over 90 representatives from 27 World Trade Center operations and business delegations from North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia Pacific.
