Savannah terminals prepare for harbor deepening

Jun 26, 2015

SAVANNAH, GA, USA – The Savannah Harbor Deepening Project (SHEP) is well under way with work starting on three important phases of the project. The Savannah Harbor Deepening Project will deepen the shipping channel of the Savannah harbor from 42 to 47 feet at mean low water thus allowing the larger, post-panamax vessels more freedom in their shipping schedules and allow for heavier container loads. The deepening will bring economic growth to the state of Georgia as well as to the entire nation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers estimates that the deepening of the Savannah Harbor will allow for an additional 3,600 cargo containers in each transit.

According to the article “Savannah Harbor Expansion Project Progresses” in Dredging Today, Lt. Gen. Thomas Bostick, Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, gave an update on SHEP at the Port of Savannah on May 28. Bostick stated, “The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project reinforces our commitment to a sustainable 21st century infrastructure that will strengthen the nation’s economy and bolster global competitiveness, create jobs, reduce risk to people and communities, and help restore and sustain the environment.”

All of this means greater opportunity for businesses interested in selling their products and services in the United States. Savannah, GA is a leader in the logistics industry. The city was named “the most logistics friendly city in the U.S.” three years in a row by Logistics Today and “Top 5 Best Cities for Port-related Intermodal Sites” by Area Development Magazine.

In addition to the Georgia Ports Authority, operator of the 4th largest and fastest growing container port in the U.S. today, private operating terminals positioned on the Savannah harbor are preparing for the expansion. In fact, waterfront industrial property, unique on the east coast of the U.S., perhaps in the world, is available for development in Savannah.

Dulany Industries, Inc. is marketing a 1,600 acre industrial site, SeaPoint Industrial Terminal Complex (SeaPoint ITC) for manufacturing, assembly, warehousing, distribution, R&D complex and intermodal inland port or logistics center. The site is the only site on the eastern seaboard or in the Gulf that offers a deep waterfront site of its size with its existing infrastructure. The site also offers a number of other advantages including, a private deep-water terminal, dual rail service, ± 650-acre heavy industrial park, ±365 usable acres (divisible) and 4,000 feet of potential wharf space for additional berths. SeaPoint ITC is located about 12 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and, as additional terminals located along the Savannah River can boast, offers only a two-day drive to reach 70% of the U.S. population. Reed Dulany, President of Dulany Industries recognizes the significance of the Savannah location and the potential for more growth.

“With a strong manufacturing base, excellent port, rail, and highway access, a strong workforce development program, and the only large deep-water industrial terminal complex with significant in-place infrastructure, Savannah is perfectly positioned to continue its track record of strong growth for many years to come!”

Peeples Industries, Inc., a World Trade Center Savannah founding investor, also operates a fully integrated private dry bulk / liquid bulk non-union marine terminal. The terminal offers an automated discharge system for bulk materials, self-discharging vessel capabilities, on-site rail track storage and open storage pad capabilities, among other things. Typical commodities handled on East Coast Terminal include wood chips/pellets, cement, gypsum, aggregate, bauxite, slag, coal and fertilizer.
