Background:

Situated on one of the largest river deltas in the world, Bangladesh depends on a vast network of inland waterways for sustaining its economic growth. Its rivers and floodplains serve as vital arteries for agriculture, fisheries, shipping, and passenger transport. Although the country’s waterway network is almost 15,000 miles long, only about 3,500 miles can be used for vessel traffic due to sedimentation and other climate-related issues. Join government officials from the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Ministry of Shipping, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), and private sector leaders to learn about potential business opportunities in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh is undertaking an ambitious initiative, known as the Delta 2100 Plan, to mitigate the impacts of flooding and increased sediment build-up by dredging major rivers and waterways. BIWTA, BWDB, and the private sector are jointly executing this plan to maintain the navigability of major rivers. In addition to dredging, the Government of Bangladesh is supporting new projects to improve inland port operations and expand waterfront development. To support these goals, the delegation has expressed interest to learn about U.S. technologies and best practices for dredging.
